What Is an Accumulator Bet? Multibets Explained

An accumulator combines several selections into one bet for a bigger payout. Learn how multibets work, how returns are calculated, and the risks.

An accumulator — often called a multibet — is a single bet made up of two or more selections. Every selection must win for the bet to pay out. In return for that extra risk, the odds of each selection are multiplied together, which can turn a small stake into a large return.

How the payout is calculated

Multiply the decimal odds of every selection, then multiply the result by your stake. Three selections at 1.50, 2.00 and 1.80 produce combined odds of 5.40. A 100 KES stake would return 540 KES if all three win.

The trade-off

Accumulators are attractive because the payout grows quickly with each leg. The catch is that a single losing selection sinks the entire bet. A ten-fold accumulator can look exciting, but the combined probability of all ten legs winning is often very low.

Tips for building a sensible multibet

  1. Keep the number of legs modest — fewer selections means a more realistic chance of a return
  2. Avoid adding a short-priced favourite purely to inflate the odds
  3. Research every selection; one weak leg undermines the whole bet
  4. Treat the potential payout as a best case, not an expectation

Used with discipline, accumulators are an enjoyable way to follow several matches at once. Used carelessly, they are an easy way to lose a stake. Decide your budget before you build the slip, not after.

Frequently asked questions

An accumulator needs at least two selections. Most bookmakers allow many more, but adding legs lowers the realistic chance of every selection winning.
